Friday night I was able to fulfill a long delayed college indie rock dream by seeing the Old 97′s. Having been a fan of them, as well as Rhett Miller’s solo work, for years I was more than willing to shoot their show at the Music Box for Goldenvoice. And though it’s been a while, they lived to my expectations and kept the rather diverse crowd enthused throughout the duration of their 2 hour set.

The same evening that Shits&Giggles came to an end, I took in the Peaces show at the Orpheum with Kevin. The crowd was full of people I was destined to see at the Monte Cristo hours later.
The differentiation between this and any other Peaches performance was that this time she was acting out Jesus Chris Superstar as a one woman show of sorts. Granted there were backup dancers and who assisted with the final chorus number, but the lady owned the stage all on her own for the duration of all acts. While many came not knowing what to expect, many Peaches fans were happy to see something that is very likely to be repeated any time soon, well after the tour ends I mean.

The last time I had the opportunity to see The New Pornographers they were on tour with Belle & Sebastian – at the time it was the perfect collegiate type tour, mind you, this was some time ago. Watching their performance in the newly renovated Music Box, it took me back a few years and I reflected on both their artistic and commercial success over the last few years. Though many have had individual side projects – most notably A.C. Newman and Neko Case, they still continue to produce amazing work collectively.
And while they continue to grow, I can still continue to listen to Mass Romantic on repeat without getting sick of it – a true testament of their original work. Be sure to see them live if possible, and make sure to pick up their latetst issue Together, out now. Tour dates here.
