155/ FRESH ONGINA

After witnessing the gay music explosion of the summer, otherwise known as The All Hearts tour featuring Robyn and Kelis, I headed over for some good Friday night fun at MJ’s. The mistress of ceremonies for the evening was the lovely Ongina (@ongina). And being that she’s been so busy with traveling and promotion for Drag U, it’s always nice to catch up. Her look that evening was especially ferosh, swarovski crystal on her head – genius

154/ Q DEPARTMENT

Last Wednesday, I was honored to be asked to shoot the Q Department Director Series event with Floria Sigismondi at the Bar Marmont. Jacqueline and the team at Q Department were an utter delight to work with, and Floria herself was sweet and endearing. Good taste and fashion enveloped the party. It was also nice to see a few familiar faces in attendance, including Michael DB, who recommended me for the job – thank you again kind sir. The crowd was eclectic and educated, with people hailing from both coasts – a true meeting of artistic minds occurring in an old Hollywood venue, a true dream for me.

153/ FREE LINDSAY

Post Pornographers, I headed over to MJ’s for a very after school special edition of Rim Job. The preoccupation of the night was Lindsay Lohan, and her first night in the klink. Free Lindsay shirts were handed out, though thankfully there were no glitter bombings as people walked into the bar. Rhea Litre’ changed it up and performed to La Lohan’s Rumors after she threw up the eight-ball she swallowed earlier in the night. Oh, the things we do when train-wrecks go to jail.

151/ NEW PORNOGRAPHERS

The last time I had the opportunity to see The New Pornographers they were on tour with Belle & Sebastian – at the time it was the perfect collegiate type tour, mind you, this was some time ago. Watching their performance in the newly renovated Music Box, it took me back a few years and I reflected on both their artistic and commercial success over the last few years. Though many have had individual side projects – most notably A.C. Newman and Neko Case, they still continue to produce amazing work collectively.
And while they continue to grow, I can still continue to listen to Mass Romantic on repeat without getting sick of it – a true testament of their original work. Be sure to see them live if possible, and make sure to pick up their latetst issue Together, out now. Tour dates here.

150/ SIZE SUNDAYS

Post Gold Coast, I moseyed over to Here Lounge for Size Sundays – our second Tom Whitman presents event of the weekend. The crowd is what one would expect of a WeHo party, with the exception of the beer bust aspect. The individual pitcher special they had going on was genius, plus I also have a fascination with all things miniature – who doesn’t? Seeing party-goers, including Bear host Jefferson Hendrick drink directly from the pitcher was priceless in a novelty sort of way.
In addition to the cute crowd, the evening also marked a retirement of sorts for Lucky Daniels from his gogo career. I’m sure we’ll see him back on the stage some day, but for now he will be using more discretion when selecting his dancing jobs. Regardless of what he does, I continue to expect greatness from one of our Randy Blue favorites, and a genuine total sweetheart. xx

149/ SML

One size does not fit all. That is the sentiment behind Cody Bayne and Nacho Nava’s latest party endevaour SmallMediumLarge. In a scene of theme specific events, the boys wanted to create something for everyone, forgoing all normative trappings of LA gay parties, most notably no gogos nor drag performances. Blasphemy? I think not. Both genetlemen are no strangers to throwing events, so this unique pairing is sure to create for an inspired evening – and people will probably be drunk, actually that’s a given.
Look forward to several surprises and rousing musical choices by resident DJs Aaron Elvis & TR/808. So after you catch some sun, or fill up on your lunch of beer please cruise on over to Akbar and play at the party for everyone. And as always, look sharp.

148: RED DRESS

The annual Red Dress party at the Gold Coast has much history in sentiment involved since it’s inception 15 years ago. All stemming from a pact made by two HIV positive bartenders, the event now serves as a celebration of life, while still maintaining an awareness for the disease that continues to claim many lives. While not everyone wears a dress, the majority of the event goers were at least a splash of red – including myself.
The sense of community that envelops the party is really something unlike most things LA. It is a true meeting of all the subsections of the gay scene – where the east meets west, and everything else in-between. Truly a touching moment in a sometimes jaded world. That said, there was a lot of looks.

147/ CHERRY POP

Martin hit up the first of our two Tom Whitman events last weekend, Cherry Pop on Saturday. Friend of RB Josh Peace (@JoshPeace) provides the tunes, so that’s already a plus out the door. In addition, there a special midnight performance by American Idol alum, Kimberly Locke. Per the usual, Martin got some amazing shots and it looks like I missed out on a good gay ol’ time.
