74/ ROGUE WAVE

Last night I raced from set to catch Rogue Wave at the El Rey Theater. I’ve been a fan of theirs for years, and the song Eyes especially tugs on my heart strings. The set was crazy amazing and I felt like I was in college all over again, in the good and sober way. In between being a fan and geeking out I got hang out with Daisy, who drove in straight from LAX after a NYC / Canada trip. She DJ’ed with Ana in between sets. The highlight was their encore rendition of my favorite Depeche Mode song, Shake the Disease – I’ll be honest, I melted a little. You can listen to their set, including the DM cover, earlier in the day on KCRW here >> Once again, a great night at the El Rey.

73/ THE LITTLE HILLS

I love how the child who’s portraying Audrina, rather accurately might I add, keeps starring at the ceiling. This parody makes The Hills interesting again, as did all the girls running out of Kristen’s bedroom in the intervention scene from last night’s episode. Sadly, I’d be way into the show again if Lauren came back. Sigh.

72/ RIM JOB

While raunch and debauchery are normally synonymous with MJ’s in Silverlake, Tuesday nights raise the stakes. I guess that should be expected when you name the night after a sexual act. I was happy to have George ask me to come in last night, in addition to our usual Friday night photo residency. The Velvet Grip was there doing free piercings, and many of the inebriated party goers made some bad decisions – I’m sure it made for good stories to recant later. And though piercings aren’t exactly my cup of tea, tattoos are. With that being said I was quite jealous of Gabriel who was lucky enough to earn a free tattoo session, which coincidentally took place at the bar – good design choice btw.
I had a blast with my friends Orion & Will, and was lucky enough to get to see Jeremy Lucido socially amongst other familiar faces. The thing I was happiest to have witnessed was the use of the outdoor jacuzzi and shower, it’d been some time since I’d seen it get some use. A definite Tuesday night recommendation.

69/ FULL FRONTAL

When else do you hear disco music echoing through the streets of Chinatown? On the last Saturday of April, the Grand Star Jazz Club was packed early with a hip, eastside crowd joined by the hot westside boys that like to play downtown. The gentlemen of Sweaty Sundays treated guests to two outdoor performances as well. Wearing some rugged, Brokeback Mountain-inspired outfits, the first group gave their folksy, modern performance to America’s A Horse With No Name, with Full Frontal Disco’s Mario Diaz joining in as well. The second was a glamorous and fierce number led by Maurice Harris. Maurice’s enchanting yellow fan was a most appropriate accessory for a night out in Chinatown.

66/ XX

On the way home from Indio I made a stop at the Ace to visit Victor and check out the tailend of Children of the Sun. We had a great dinner at Matchstick shortly after and discussed the possibility of seeing the xx later this summer. It just reminded me of how much I adore this song.
